The eight stages are carefully worked through with great research, helpful worksheets and slides to enable all kinds of parent "helpers" to understand and feel comfortable with talking about the minefield which can be the early stages of parenthood. The idea of planting seeds...seeds of hope...that there are different strategies and ways of dealing with this new paradigm that is parenthood - early on, building on strengths and new skills. I'm looking forward to Level III, becoming a Facilitator and taking this fantastic model out there.

I have been running new mothers groups for 16 years and have heard countless stories and experiences and struggles during this period. This course nails it! I loved the incredible details and background knowledge and evidence that was presented. I have so much more now that I can offer my new families and will work on ways to integrate these into my calm parenting groups - particularly partners! Brilliant! I recommend this training to any health professionals in this field. Thank you Elly!

I would have benefitted so much from taking this course as a participant before I began my own parenthood journey! Not only have I learnt a great deal about the challenges and potential pitfalls faced in the transition from 'partners to parents', but participating in Becoming Us for professional development has given me a treasured opportunity to reflect on my own story and experiences as parent and partner. I finish this course excited at the opportunity to incorporate my learning into my counselling practice and share it with my clients. And a massive thank you for the marvellous handouts. it's always fabulous to add new resources to the counselling tool kit!

By considering the common concerns or issues faced by expectant parents and suggesting and encouraging ways they may address these issues together, I can see how it will strengthen the couple's bond. Encouraging realistic expectations of parenthood will help them prepare for the reality of parenthood. This in turn should reduce unrealistic expectations that may contribute to relationship problems and disruptive issues within the family unit... All this from planting small seeds in the antenatal education sessions we run 😊

Discover 8 stages of parenthood and where they could take YOU

Why I invite you to this training...

As a relationship counsellor and parent educator for over 25 years, I saw too many couples who had fallen into the support gap between pregnancy and parenting, leaving them woefully unprepared for the normal twists and turns of early parenthood.

Not recognising that parenthood was even "a thing", let alone a HUGE thing, and something that they needed preparation for and support through, they set out on a trajectory that was destined to drive them apart:

They blamed each other (or themselves), lost the support of their partner and their confidence as parents. They became increasingly disconnected as a couple.

You may already know how this can lead to high rates of anxiety, depression and relationship distress. A whopping 92% of parents report increased conflict in their first year of family and 67% a decline in relationship satisfaction in the first three. More than one in 7 mamas and one in 10 dads suffer from a perinatal mood disorder. A traumatic birth experience increases their risk.

Needless to say, this is not a good start for families.

In the days of the village, elders and more experienced parents guided newborn ones through the parenthood rite of passage. Becoming a parent is more complicated and challenging in our world today with so many conflicts and stresses, so more supportive guidance is needed...

And yet it’s nobody’s role to be a guide. Until now. Thank you for taking a leap of faith and diving into Level I of the Becoming Us training. I hope you'll continue on your learning journey so you can do more of this meaningful, purposeful, sometimes challenging, but incredibly beautiful Becoming Us work.
